MEDITERRANEAN CHESS ASSOCIATION

About

The Mediterranean Chess Association emerged from a shared desire to connect chess communities across the diverse cultures bordering the Mediterranean Sea. From its beginnings, the association focused on using chess as a common language—one that could bridge national, linguistic, and cultural differences in a region shaped by centuries of exchange.

Formed in 2002, in Bled, Slovenia, the association became a platform for cooperation among national federations, clubs, and individual players. It promoted regional tournaments, training initiatives, and youth development programs, helping to raise competitive standards while encouraging friendship and mutual respect among participants. Special emphasis was often placed on junior chess, education, and the inclusion of emerging chess communities.

Today, the Mediterranean Chess Association is recognized for fostering collaboration and celebrating the region’s rich chess heritage. By blending tradition with modern approaches to competition and learning, it continues to support chess as both a sport and a cultural connector throughout the Mediterranean world.
